
Wilderness First Responder (WFR)
Offered in a hybrid format, this 80+ hour course is intended for outdoor professionals, those who work in high-risk outdoor environments (e.g. wildland fire, trail crews, mountain bikers), and those who engage in multi-day extended trips in remote areas, under challenging weather conditions, with limited equipment, unreliable communication, and/or little to no access to emergency care. Includes CPR, AED and epinephrine injection certifications. Participants complete asynchronous learning modules online (30+ hours), then participate in the 50+ hour in-person sessions that take place over two weekends on the WNMU Campus in Silver City, NM (Feb. 13-15 and Feb. 21-22, 2026 (8 a.m. – 5 p.m.). Participants must complete both sessions to certify. Additional details will be provided upon registration.
Cost: $850 public, $800 public service provider or member of the Western Institute for Lifelong Learning, $725 WNMU faculty/staff; $350 full-time WNMU student. Registration closes Jan. 2, 2026. If you are interested in taking this class for academic credit, speak to a WNMU advisor.
