What is a Resident Assistant?

Resident Assistants (RAs) are essential members of the Western New Mexico University Office of Residence Life & Housing team. Supervised directly by a Residence Hall Director, the RA is expected to work toward the accomplishment of the goals and objectives of the Office of  Housing & Residence Life . Staff members strive to partner with residents to create inclusive communities that enhance and support the students’ overall university experience. A successful Resident Assistant is committed to actively engaging with students and building positive living-learning communities within the residence halls.

RA Responsibilities

Community Building

Make every effort to be available to residents, and actively initiate contact with and spend time with residents to develop a rapport with them.

Assist in roommate conflicts and the room change process.

Work with residents to provide educational opportunities that are interesting and conducive to the growth and development of students.

Serve as a role model by abiding by and enforcing all university policies, while encouraging and assisting residents in understanding and abiding by the rules and regulations of the university.

RA Responsibilities

Administrative Duties

Assist with the opening and closing of residence halls during all breaks and the start/end of the school year.

Cover duty in assigned building according to the RA duty schedule. This includes remaining in the Hall Office during duty hours (8pm- 11:00pm weekdays, 8pm-12:30am weekends) while performing hourly rounds.

Attend both August and January trainings.

Attend weekly staff meetings, All-Staff meetings, One-on-One meetings, participate in all staff events and the RA hiring process.

Report maintenance issues in a timely manner.

RA Extracurricular Policy

The RA job is considered the primary out-of-class commitment. An RA is not permitted to hold any off-campus jobs or work-study positions on campus without the explicit permission of the Director of Housing & Residence Life. The Office of Residence Life reserves the right to ask the RA to limit his/her commitments if they conflict with the RA position.

Qualifications for Employment

  • Students must be: flexible, energetic, personable, a team player, outgoing, professional, timely, goofy, dependable, knowledgeable, responsible, creative, patient, reliable, compassionate, and able to relate and interact well with students, parents, faculty, and staff.
  • Maintaining of a minimum 2.75 grade point average in every semester while employed in the RA position.
  • Adhering to all college policies and procedures.
  • Fulfill all RA duties, responsibilities, and expectations as outlined in the job description, and as explained by his/her supervisor, as well as other responsibilities as required.
  • Must be available to participate in ALL training sessions and work collectively as part of the reslife team.

Training May 12th – 17th

Training June 26th / Orientation June 28th – 30th

Training July 17th / Orientation July 19th – 21st

Orientation Aug 6th – 9th

 

Operation Move-In August 16th – 18th

Fall break may be required

Spring Break May be required

Halls Close on May 12th

Summer as needed

* In addition there is an in-service training held at the end of every month.
